Acrylic and oil on old lining canvas
60 x 60 cm
2025
This work is made from the lining canvas removed from the back of a nineteenth-century landscape painting that I was restoring. The lining had failed and needed to be replaced.
When the painting was first lined and restored they extended the top edge of the canvas and painted the blue strip to enlarge the sky. Once removed, I began to paint onto it while it was still crumpled after removal. It was subsequently flattened and restored, then adhered to a new canvas. The work becomes both object and record: a fragment of the painting’s physical history, reconfigured as a new image.
The original painting depicted a lush, green landscape. Re-presented here, its discarded support takes on a different resonance, reflecting the changing landscape and the effects of the increasingly extreme climate experienced across Europe over the last few summers. Stig Evans is painter and a paintings conservator.
