Monotype
100 x 70 cm
2025
‘Edgeline, Due North’ is a monotype, made by rolling out pure-pigment etching inks on to a bare metal plate with printmaking rollers, drawing and improvising an image into the inked up surface, and then pressing the plate through an etching press onto a sheet of pure cotton-based paper.
The source of this image is a fieldbook drawing I made at the foot of a shoreline cliff face, where scree slopes of rubble and stone are continually falling in the face of erosive seas and winds. The cliff faces north-west, and on this morning was picking up and reflecting blue Atlantic light, while the rising sun illuminated the clifftop edge from behind.
Drawing this was risky but exhilarating, and the resulting print seemed to convey some of this geological drama.
