Mixed Media on cast plaster sculpture set on a 25cm dia mirror
25 x 5 cm
2023
My artworks are indexical traces, drawing on & with the materiality of landscape, in which I have walked.
Using my handmade oak gall ink, along with objects collected & photographs taken whilst walking, I interrogate ways of seeing.
Lines & marks in the work invite considerations between pathways & early iterations of language. These become ‘language games’, relating to Wittgenstein’s concept. Eternity lines, drawn without a beginning or end, sign the spiritual steps taken in the process of navigating my mark making.
The work is, thus, multi-layered in its execution, including literary references, in writers like Nan Sheppard who whilst walking would both, lie down, & look through her legs, in order to use her body to transform her relationship to & understanding of landscape.
Each element of my work explores what we see & choose not to see; as if a portal to perceive what lies beyond ourselves
