Toadflax, woundwort, goat’s-beard, viper’s bugloss… these poetic wildflower names conjure up a rural idyll. But if you’re looking for our native wildflowers you might struggle to find them in the wide fields of the open countryside, where intensive methods can leave little habitat.
Instead turn your attention to the verges alongside Britain’s road network. That’s where you’ll find our wild plants; on roundabouts, slip roads and in litter-strewn lay-bys. These places have become a refuge. Together they connect every part of the country and add up to an area the size of Dorset - a huge wildlife reserve we never knew we had.
Nessie Ramm is on a mission to paint the wild verges of Britain, to bring the beauty and value of these unloved spaces to our attention. Her work is also a deeper call to re-evaluate our relationship with the natural world.
