Occasionally a particular place at a certain moment inspires me as an artist. Carrara was such a place. My painting is a view from the very top of the quarry in northern Tuscany, Italy. It is overlooking what is left of a mountain of marble, not just any marble, but the purest white marble so admired by Michelangelo who used this beautiful stone for his sculpture. In all of my work, whether the natural landscape or the built environment, I am fascinated by the balance between form and space.
