Lara Davies - Fleeting

£2,100.00

Oil on canvas
50 x 30 cm
2025

Lara Davies uses painting as a way of holding on to the magic and freedom that she feels when she is out cycling, away from the city and into the wilderness, often in the Scottish Highlands. The outcomes are landscapes that hover between figuration and abstraction, souvenirs of her cycling adventures, preserving a moment that otherwise eludes capture. Davies builds the paintings up in thin layers, exploiting the qualities of water-based oil paint and the immiscibility of water and oil. She uses a water spray-gun to create directionality of the paint, minimally intervening with cloths and a brush to add in impressions of landscape features where needed. Davies thinks of the surface of the paintings like photograms, absorbing the emotions she feels when out on her bike. She wants viewers to share in her escapism: to get lost in the landscape and disappear for a short while.
