Jane Turner - Findspots

£100.00

Digital photogaphs, on paper, mounted on thin board

2026

Findspots is a project about landscape history, particularly as revealed through the process of rescue archaeology. I photographed local archaeological finds, took the photographs to the findspots, the places where the finds had been discovered, and photographed them there. A narrative, on my website, describes these journeys into the landscape and my experience of locating the findspots from references in archaeological reports, alongside changes and developments encountered in the landscape. The placement of the photographs affected the distance between past and present. The image of the neolithic axe, abandoned or deposited circa 6000 years ago, occupies the same place as the axe did when it was first used. The gap between then and now seems reduced to a hairline crack on account of the continuity of the place. The axe was photographed at Chippenham Museum and can be seen on display there.
