Watercolour with site earths and debris on cotton rag paper
200 x 87 cm
2025
Weather is neither good nor bad, it simply is.
Land is not too hard or too red, it simply is.
Working outdoors is where dust, grit, paws, frost, thaw, hail, gale and rain participate. Where supports are softened by rain, chewed by mice, nibbled by snails, trampled by cows, erased by rain.
As a child I painted in watercolour out on the black lands of the Isle of Ely fen. I remained a pleinair painter because it was when I was outside that the mundane became miraculous.
Under sky, my stance shifts from observer to participant. I cultivate porousity, leaning into the animacy around me. Curiosity ensures I'm alive in all my senses to the commune around me. Work arises out of reciprocity.
The fabric of paintings integrate geology, litter with water-media.
Elected to The Royal Watercolour Society in 2022.
